When you help us with this project…
You are changing the lives of teenagers. Every year, we sponsor Curious Students who wish to participate in hands-on, enquiry-driven, project-based learning, but can not afford the cost. The programs we work with are typically STEM-focused and created collaboratively by both a professional in a STEM field and a master constructivist teacher. These programs have strong soft-skills components aimed at helping students develop a well-rounded skill set. Ultimately, students sponsored by us acquire strong practical and life skills while discovering interests that develop into careers and lifelong pursuits.
Hands-on: learning with the hands fires up the imagination in a way no other learning environment can and also allows students to develop valuable skills.
Enquiry-driven: enquiry or curiosity lights up the mind and the heart allowing students to quickly grasp AND store new procedural and declarative memories.
Project-based learning: context creates a foundation for learning, and projects weave together the context of life–every major area of our lives touches something that started as a project and ended up as a product, service, or program.
STEM-focused: our programs specifically aim at STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) with a strong emphasis on Art and Entrepreneurship (eSTEAM, as some might call it).
Strong soft-skills: if hard skills like programming and engineering are the vehicles for success, soft-skills like collaboration and negotiation are the fuel to get us where we want to go.
Discovering Interests: this is the last in the list because it is the pinnacle, the most important outcome for students in our programs. All the big ideas create a back drop for one all important task, discovering what really lights the fires of curiosity and imagination.
How do we know who to choose? Our name says it all. We want to help the curious students–those with a fire to learn. Some students may be super curious but burnt out on school while others are so curious they devour books and classes with a vengeance. It isn’t about the grades. It is about the curiosity.
How do we decide the amount of support? Everyone is unique and so are their needs. Sliding scale is the best way to honor those differences. We also ask families to contribute what they can because we believe strongly that having an investment in the outcome increases the engagement. Success is the results of strong collaborations, and we work closely with families to find the best recipe.
- In 2017, we will be targeting 10 Engineering Camps and a couple of deeper mentoring opportunities held at locations throughout California and the South Eastern United States.
- We anticipate a student scholarship need of approximately $15,000-$20,000, based on previous year’s data.
